OSHA Sees Every Site at Once. Can Your SAP SuccessFactors Setup Do the Same?

Multi-site safety reporting and analytics connected to SAP SuccessFactors

When OSHA inspects one of your sites, it can look at citations from all other sites you run. Its Field Operations Manual states that a citation at one site can turn the same hazard on another into a repeat violation, costing penalties of up to $165,514 each.

SAP SuccessFactors can store every location, headcount, and hours worked, but with no native incident management module, it has no record of the injuries at those sites.

This leaves the following question: how can a corporate safety team see every site the way OSHA does?

How Do Multi-Site SAP SuccessFactors Companies Track Safety Across Locations?

SuccessFactors companies usually track safety in one of three ways.

  1. Collecting each site’s log and combining them into a corporate spreadsheet on a set schedule. To get a reliable organization-wide view, you must receive logs from all sites & compare them by calculating incident rates with total hours worked from HR or payroll.
  2. Using a custom incident object built in SuccessFactors. SAP notes that custom objects are reportable by default, so teams can break incidents down by location in Story reports. The report shows what was logged; however, corrective actions and follow-ups are still tracked elsewhere.
  3. Using a safety tool with its own list of locations. This is kept in sync with sites in SuccessFactors via the integration pathway.

All of them start from the same OSHA requirement: keep a separate injury log and summary for every physical location expected to operate a year or more, so safety data is split by site from the start.

Each of these routes provides some view across sites, raising an important question: what does a site-by-site view leave out?

What Does a Site-by-Site View Miss for Companies Running SAP SuccessFactors?

It misses three things: repeating patterns across locations, repeat-citation risk those patterns create, and fair comparisons between sites.

In each case, SuccessFactors already stores the workforce data needed, but the incident data exists somewhere else. OSHA’s recommended practices ask employers to group similar incidents and look for trends in the injuries reported. SuccessFactors already does half the job by grouping employees by location, department, and job, but it doesn’t have any incidents to group. If the same injury keeps happening in the same job across multiple sites, SuccessFactors cannot show it.

SuccessFactors also stores the headcount data behind repeat-penalty exposure.

OSHA builds repeat history from an employer’s nationwide establishments, and for employers with 250+ employees, a repeat violation’s base penalty is multiplied by five the first time, and by ten the second time. Without cross-site incident records, a hazard fixed at site A can be completely missed at site B.

Site comparisons depend on hours worked, which SuccessFactors already has.

A 400-person site with six recordable injuries has an incident rate of 1.5 while a 50-person site with three has a rate of 6.0. When injury logs and hours are in separate systems, a smaller site’s problem is easier to miss.
